How it works

From a place to a piece on the wall

  1. Design it here

Find the place, or tell our co-pilot about it. Choose the kind of map, the colors, the ground it covers, the size and the words; add your own tracks if you like. The preview redraws as you go.

  2. Approve the proof

We email you a picture of your map exactly as it will print, with a secure link to pay. Ask for any change, or pay when it looks right. Nothing is charged before you’ve seen it.

  3. We make it and ship it

We print it in raised color, layer on layer, set it in a black shadow-box frame and ship it to you, or to them with your card note.

Why “beta”?

Mapped is brand new. While we’re in beta, every order is handled by hand: you send your design, we email you a proof and a secure Stripe link, and you pay only once it looks right. If anything here confused you, tell us; it shapes what we fix next.

What exactly is it?

A relief map printed in colored plastic, a fraction of a millimeter at a time. Mountains and valleys rise from the surface, colors climb with the height of the land, and rivers, names and your title stand up in raised lines. It sits in a black shadow-box frame with room for the relief, ready to hang or stand.

How big is it?

The Desk map is one plate about 250 × 200 mm in an 8 × 10 in frame. The Wall map is four plates set edge to edge, about 500 × 400 mm, in a 20 × 16 in frame; you can see the seams up close, as on a set of charts. On the map tab you can shape your own: more plates, fewer, or a different size, and we’ll quote it.

How long does it take?

Each plate takes most of a day to print, after you approve the proof; then it’s framed and shipped. Put a date in “Needed by” and we’ll tell you right away if we can’t make it.

Can I add my own hike or route?

Yes. Add a GPX, KML or KMZ from Strava, Garmin, AllTrails, onX or CalTopo, your Google saved places or Timeline, or paste a map link. They print raised in an accent color. They stay in your browser until you order.

Can I change it after I order?

Yes, until you approve the proof. Reply to the proof email with what you’d like changed.

Where do you ship?

Within the US for now, shipping included.

Is it accurate?

It’s drawn from real elevation data and public map data at a true scale, with the land’s height exaggerated a little so it reads. It’s art, not for navigation.
